A tragedy that lead to the rise of the "New Order"... the Zin Empire. Ten years later, in the year of our Lord 1997, the children of the fallen generation has come of age. Now it begins. The brave journey to bring light... Into the Valley of Darkness Chapter 5 Act 4: Weasels and Treachery "Then Yaweh rained on Sodom and Gomorrah burning sulfur out of the heavens from Yahweh..." - Genesis 19:23 The guard stared at the piece of paper before him before giving the carrier a puzzled expression, "What's this?" "New orders from the Ice Queen," The man replied with a grin before motioning to the guarded door, "Looks like this one's another 649." "Whoopie-doo," The guard said sarcastically as he waved the paper away, "I wish they wouldn't act so careless about these things. This is a neutral zone for God's sake. The least thing they could do is bring the sheep to the slaughter house first." The other man shrugged, "Just following orders." The guard turned and unlocked the door... When the lights started to flicker. The guard frowned and stared at the display, "What in the..." Then all the alarms in the entire building triggered on before the primary power system died. Nevertheless... it was enough for all of hell to break loose. "Sorry to do this to you, bud," The man whispered apologetically to the unconscious man on his feet before turning to the task at hand. He opened the interrogation room door, only to be attacked by a flurry of arms in the dark. Expecting the attack, he deftly caught his attacker's arms and immobilized his prisoner in a tight bear hug. "You're out of shape, Sweetheart," He said in an amused tone above the girl's indignant and colourful clamours, "Your Dad's going to be real upset." The girl stopped, "Raven?" Raven loosened his hold and let the girl turn around to face him, "Who were you expecting? Batman?" Jessie let out a sob of relief as she clung to the older man. "Shhh..."Raven whispered soothingly, "It's okay, Sweetie. I'm going to take you home." "Wait! Becky!" Jessie exclaimed, "They got Becky! We've got to get her out of here." "She's not here," Raven replied "You know about Becky?" Jessie said as she pulled away from her father's friend. It was only then she noticed the uniform, "You're undercover, aren't you? You're supposed to save her, aren't you?" "Jess... We don't have enough time..." "No! You can't do this! You can't blow your cover! You can't abandon her!" "He will not have to," A third voice called out in the dark Before the man known as Raven could move, a hard object hit him at the base of his neck, rendering the man unconscious on the floor. It was then a percentage of the auxiliary power kicked in, returning the screaming alarms to full blast. A dim light bathed the room, and Jessie found herself facing the barrel of a Zin Paladin Protocol standard issue automatic pistol. "If you wish to live, you will do as I say without question," Hadji demanded in a low tone, "If you wish to die, say so and I will kill you now." Jessie narrowed her eyes sarcastically, "Hmmm. Slavery or death... nice choice you're giving me here." "Either choice will be painless," Hadji replied bluntly Jessie stared at the young man. Though he wears a uniform stained with the blood of innocents... and his voice as hard as the Zin witch... his eyes were almost... pleading? Don't trust the enemy! She could hear her father's voice screaming out logic. But her instincts were... silent. Despite of herself, she decided to give her instincts a second chance... Jessie sighed as she raised her arms in the air, "Well... I don't feel like dying yet." "Good," Hadji replied, his voice laced with apparent relief. He threw an object to her direction, "Put those on." Jessie caught it in her hands, stared at pair of handcuffs incredulously before glaring at the young man, "You have got to be kidding!" "No questions." *** "Not bad for an amateur, huh?" John gave the woman beside him a satisfied grin at the sight of the mild scrimmage happening around them "Not bad... for a school boy prank," The mysterious woman made an amused laugh as she pulled over to a spot, "If you want to buy your friends enough time to actually get out of the place, you'll need a distraction even more... spectacular." "Hey, why are we stopping here?" John asked in alarm "Watch and learn, kid," She replied with a grin as she pulled out a small object in her hand and pushed a button *** The building shook in its foundation in a chain of succeeding explosions. Jessie felt her companion's strong grip on her arm as he prevented her from stumbling forward at the force of the shock. One didn't need to be an expert to figure out what caused them. She didn't have time to even emit a self-satisfied grin at the rush of panic that followed as she felt her captor roughly pull her along the frenzied mob in the halls. "OW! Not so hard," Jessie hissed "Sorry," Hadji replied apologetically, "But it would help if you start acting more like a convincing prisoner." Jessie gave the young man a venomous look, "What exactly do you want me to do? Scream like a hyperventilating damsel in distress?" Hadji merely sighed as he pulled the girl through the door outside of the building. The smell of burning rubber and fuel overpowering the smell of the damp air hit them like a physical blow. Jessie hid her face behind the sleeves of her clothes to prevent the fumes from further overwhelming her senses. All they can do is gape in shock at the Embassy personnel scrambling in panic at the chaos. Jessie felt the young man pull her arm again as they broke into a sprint, only this time, she reached out and clutched the young man's uniform like a life saver... terrified at the thought of being washed away in the tide of the sea of confusion before them. Then crash into her captor's body as he stopped abruptly at the vehicle that pulled over to block their path. 'They found us!' Jessie's heart pounded in horror at the sight of the jeep and its uniformed occupants. It was then one of the soldiers looked at her and gave her a familiar lopsided grin, "Hey Red! Missed me?" Tears blurred her eyes, whether it be from the smoke or at the sight of the vision before her, she wasn't sure. She wiped her eyes on her sleeve and gave her friend a relieved smile, "You sure took your sweet time, didn't you, Hot Shot?" "This little Kodak moment is nice and all, but if you guys want to get out of here in one piece, may I suggest a little hustle?" Jessie felt her blood run cold at the sound of the female voice. She looked up and saw a familiar face looking down at her impassively, "What's SHE doing here?" "Saving your life, sweetie," The woman retorted, "Now get in before I change my mind." Jessie planted herself on the ground stubbornly, "I don't want to owe ANYTHING from you." "Bloke." Without word or warning, Jessie suddenly felt herself being lifted from the ground and dumped unceremoniously into the jeep. "Keep her still," Hadji commanded to the stunned blonde as he jumped into the vehicle himself and sat on the dazed girl, before leaning forward to bark a simple order to the driver, "Move!" The woman's green eyes met the young officer's eyes briefly in the rear view mirror. Though her lips remained a serious impassive line, her eyes smiled into an expression of amusement as she obeyed the order. *** "REPORT!" Anaya's voice rang at the terrified personnel's ears. The young man babbled incoherently as he fumbled through his useless equipment to search for an answer. "I am surrounded by useless idiots," Anaya stated in controlled fury as she sun around to the nearest window. Desperately trying to control her urge to beat something senseless. Specifically the imbecile before her. Her eyes scanned desperately through the black smoke that plumed outside. She froze at a scene in disbelief. She opened the window, ignoring the putrid fumes that attacked her senses. The reality of the situation outside, only confirmed what her mind desperately tried to perceive as untrue. As if sensing her, the figure inside the jeep below looked up and met her eyes. For a moment, it seemed as if had time stopped. 'Don't do it Chhotay shehzade. You know that I always win in these little combat games we play.' Her mind screamed desperately at the young man The young man simply held his chin up and lifted his hand in a sharp salute to his superior officer... mentor... best friend... before time resumed and the jeep pulled away. Leaving the bewildered young woman to do nothing but watch her young friend's figure disappear in the distance... his long hair flying in the wind. "I have my report M---" was all embassy personnel managed to utter before a fist swung at him and broke his jaw. "Must you do that, sister? It's not very wise to let your emotions get the best of you," Melana's voice filtered in the room Anaya simply gave her sister a menacing glare. Melana said nothing in reply other than return her sister's gave with her usual self-knowing expressionless stare. Her 'I told you so' look. Anaya clenched her fist. "You," She barked at the young man on the floor, not lifting her irate scowl from her staring match The young man rose to his feet, desperately trying hard not to emit a moan. "Send this message to the Indian government the moment the systems go online," Anaya continued, "We regret to announce that his highness, Rajah Behkhadji* of the province of Bangalore, has perpetrated the crime of high treason against the United Governments of the New Order." A thick cloud of silence settled in the room as Anaya walked up to her sister, "This is merely the start of a new game." Melana didn't give any reaction to her sister's harsh whisper. It was only when her sister's calm figure disappeared in the mer of chaos in the halls that she allowed her satisfied Cheshire cat grin to line her lips. (End of Chapter 5) (To Be Continued) written by: Ina-chan *stolen from Daria's fic, "Forever's No Time At All" (excellent read! Now available at Ina-chan's fanfic site at http://members.xoom.com/inachan/4ever.html) Gomen Daria! I didn't ask your permission first. I just thought it was a really KEWL name too... comments, criticisms, bricks to inachan2@ican.net Author's Squawk: WHOO-HOO! Finally ended another chapter! Yes, this is definitely a big turning point in the story... and if things go according to planned... You guys will just have to endure FOUR more chapters before this baby is done and over with. I was going through my stuff and cleaning my hard drive and disks and everything when I stumbled upon the very first piece of fiction I posted that evolved into this big headache... and it was dated: September 21, 1997. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? MAN! It's been that long! Well, one of my goals for the year is to actually try to finish all my unfinished fics. So if the gods are on my side, hopefully we'll have Valley done before its 2nd year anniversary. Thanks for everyone's comments and criticisms. If you need to read the chapters prior to this one, please visit my fanfic pages or at Suze's Archive... though my pages is more advisable because I don't think I sent Suze the modified version yet. I sorta modified parts of the story while transcribing it in HTML so I don't really have a hard copy of the new versions with me 'cept for the ones posted in my fanfic site. The addy is written above for you guys who are interested. I don't think I have the energy or the patience to resend all of the earlier chapters. Ja matta ne!
