Jan.29, 1999 By Andrea Sowers-- QueenAndrea_2000@yahoo.com “So how is school going?” asked Estella as they walked inside the house. “Oh its great! My roommates are wonderful. I love them so much. And my boyfriend --“ “Boyfriend?” “Yeah, boyfriend. He’s name is Brent.” “And when do I get to meet this--Brent?” “Oh, I don’t know, in a couple of minutes, he’s staying in town until school starts back.” “Hmm. That’s nice. What hotel is he staying in?” Jessie laughed. “Well, I guess you could call it the Quest Hotel.” “What?! You mean he’s staying here?” Jessie nodded. Estella glanced at Race as he walked in the door. “And you agreed to this?” “Agreed to what?” asked Race. “To letting her boyfriend stay here!” “Oh, that.” “Yes, that!” “Mom, chill it’s no big deal! It’s not like where sleeping in the same room or anything.” Estella glared at her. “Hey, Estella, I thought that was you I heard.” Estella’s face softened. “Hey, Jonny!” Jessie let out a sigh of relief as they continued to talk. Jonny had once again saved the day. She quickly slipped away from them and upstairs while they continued to talk. Jessie opened the door quietly and poked her head in. Brent was still sitting on the bed where she had left him. “Hey, Brent, “ she started. “Your mom freaked out when she found I was staying here and now she want to meet me, right?” “Umm, yeah, how’d you know she was here?” “Saw her through the window. You’re a dead ringer of her, so it wasn’t hard to figure out who she was.” “Oh, well, she does want to meet you and I must warn you she’s a lot tougher then my dad. I’ve got my dad wrapped around my finger, but my mom.…she’s another story.” Brent laughed. “Oh, I’m not worried. I’ve dealt with parents before. They’re all pretty easy to charm, once you know what to say.” “Well, for sake, I hope you know what to say!” He laughed again. “No sweat!” Jessie muttered a “I sure hope so” as they descended down the stairs. He then silently whispered in her ear, “Don’t worry! It’s in the bag!” Jessie shook her head. *Man, with that attitude he’ll never survive! Mom will chew him up and spit him back out in no time!* Estella’s face turned rock hard again as she saw Jessie and Brent walking down the stairs. She surveyed Brent as he came down. His black hair swept across his eyes and his built was rather muscular. *Well, I got to give it to her, she sure knows how to pick them. But he’s too over confident, for his own good. I think it’s about time he had a good run through the mill* she thought as she laughed to herself. “Mama, this is Brent Michael. Brent this is my mom, Estella Velesquez.” Brent held out his hand. “It’s such a pleasure to meet you! I’ve heard so much about you!” She shook his hand. “I wish I could say the same,” replied Estella as she glared at Jessie. Jessie smiled back. “Sorry, mom, I guess it kind of slipped my mind when we talked on the phone.” “Uh-huh,” she replied. “Likely story.” “Well, umm, why don’t we go sit down where we can be more comfortable,” Jessie said moving towards the living room. They all nodded in agreement. “So, Brent, what are you studying at Harvard?” questioned Estella as she sat down. “Well,” started Brent sitting next to Jessie, “I’m studying Biophysics.” “ Biophysics huh?” asked Estella coldly. “Why’d you pick that to study?” “Well I suppose it was because of my father. I adored him when I was little and as I got older he became my role model more and more. I wanted to follow in his footsteps I wanted to be exactly like him. So studying Biophysics was my last step.” “You father sounds like a great man.” Replied Estella. “Yes he was. He dies when I was 17.” “Oh I’m sorry,” she said sympathetically. “It’s ok. His lived his life to the full and he was ready to go. He always said he had no regrets.” Estella nodded. “What did her die of, if you don’t mind me asking.” “I don’t mind. I was cancer. He gained several years with the radiation and then the chemotherapy treatment. But once the chemotherapy stopped working, he gave up. He decided it was his time to go.” “Oh, how sad.” “Yeah, it was really hard,” Brent stopped for a second and took a deep breath, “ to let him go.” Jessie wrapped her arm around his and gave it a little squeeze. “What’s going on in here?” asked Race as he walked into the living room, only to see both Jessie and Estella dabbing there eyes a little. “Nothing,” replied Estella as Race sat down. Race nodded unconvinced. “So what where you guys talking about?” “Um, we were just talking about Brent.” “Oh.” “So, Race, I’d love to hear about some of your stories!” Jessie smiled as Race began one his stories. She knew a long night lay ahead of them. **** Jessie yawned as she walked upstairs with Brent. It was already 11:30. They had been talking with her parents for over four hours. “I didn’t think they’d ever shut up,” Jessie stated as they walked into Brent’s room. He laughed. “They were just enjoying their time with their daughter.” “And who boyfriend. Who I may I add has a little brown spot on his nose,” she said tapping his nose. “Who me?” She laughed. “Yeah, you!” “Well, what can I say? I’m an excellent charmer.” “Yes, but you’re my little charmer,” said giving him a light kiss. Then, she lay down on the bed. “But I do have to give it to you. I’ve never seen both of my parents like someone I was dating. In fact, I don’t think either one ever like anyone I’ve ever dated.” She yawned again as he sat next to her, wrapping his arm around her. “Is that so?” “Yep,” she answered curling up to him. “Well, I have to say I really like your parents. I thought I was going to have some problems with mom at first. She seemed so cold, but it was like viola she loosened up. And she was wonderful once she really loosened up. And your dad. He’s cool, too! All those stories. Man, what a life.” He paused. “Hey, Jessie. Jess.” He looked down to see Jessie fast asleep in his arms. He kissed her head and he laid her down and covered her up. He then grabbed one of the extra pillows and blankets and made a bed on the floor. “Night, Jess,” he whispered as he closed his eyes. Okay thats it for now.
