Chapter 2 =09=93Ms. Bannon, you are late. Where is your pass?=94 Mr. Trice blared.= =09=93Well, you see, I didn=92t get a pass=94 Jessie said with spite. =09She couldn=92t believe her tone of voice or her smart allec attitude. Apparently neither could the rest of the class. They stared Jessie down as she dropped her books off at her desk, which is= in the front role (having a last name that starts with a =91B=92 just happens to be one of Jessie=92s pet peeves of t= he hour). She continued walking to stand in front of Mr. Trice. =09=93I don=92t need attitude from you Ms. Bannon=94 Mr. Trice said malici= ously. =93Go get a pass and it better be quick we have a quiz today and there is no make up=94 =09Jessie was in complete shock from the attitude this teacher was using. Nothing like this has ever occurred to her as being possible. This kind of stuff only happens in movies. =09=93This day just gets better and better=94 Jessie muttered =93I wasn=92= t late, Sir. My locker was jammed,=94 Jessie continued in a change of tone but anger changed her mind =93I=92ve had the= worst morning of my life, I woke up late, the hot water didn=92t work, my back pack broke..twice, I lost my wallet, I was al= most hit by a freaking car, the security guard kept me at the front of the school for a good fifteen minute chew out session a= nd now you, as a teacher, have the gail to treat me like some kind of insect!=94 Jessie found herself yelling at the top of= her lungs by the time she was finished. =09=93Go to the principles office right this minute young lady!=94 Mr. Tri= ce yelled back. =09=93Gladly=94 Jessie replied. =09=93Not another word now get out of my classroom!=94 Mr. Trice yelled. =09Jessie stormed past her desk grabbed her back pack and rushed out of th= e room. She made sure that the door did not slam behind her. The last thing she needs is for Mr. Trice to com= e running after her. Instead of turning right to go to the front office Jessie turns left and started towards her locker in a quick angered stride. When she reached her locker she remembered that the stupid thing is jammed. With a quick irate motion = she threw her back pack against the locker with an extremely loud thud. She didn=92t care if the entire school had heard = the commotion, she was too mad to think straight. =09=93Holy jeez, calm done Jess=94 a friendly voice called from behind Jes= sie. =09=93CK, I feel like I=92m going to kill someone=94 Jessie mumbled. =09CK laughed a little as she pulled her long brown hair up off of her nec= k. =09=93You know, I wish the people that run this place would figure out how= to use the air conditioning=94 CK said. =09=93Yeah, that would be nice=94 Jessie said. =09Turning to face one of her good friends, tried to stuff back all of the= anger in her body down a shade or two. =09=93Jessie, damn what the hell happened to you!?=94 CK asked. =09CK had not only picked up on the fact that Jessie seems to be very angr= y but a few other things were brought to her attention instantly. The fact that Jessie appeared to be having the w= orst day of her life was no exception and the huge gash on Jessie=92s knee stood out quite powerfully. Life was most definitely giving Jessie the wrong end of the stick today. =09=93You don=92t wanna know=94 Jessie answered =09Jessie let her guard fall quite a bit when she realized that CK already= knew just about everything that she was trying to deal with. =09If there is anyone that Jessie can always talk to its CK. Of course th= ere was Jonny and then there was the voice of reason, Hadji but they had a few defects. Jonny was great to talk to a= bout just about anything but Jessie often found his methods extremely unorthodox and hard to comprehend as relevant. Then there was Hadji. That guy, even with all of his wisdom, could say so little using so much. Hadji had managed t= o confuse Jessie a great deal a number of times and hurting her more than helping her. There was one major flaw with both= of them; they were both males. Nothing against males but there are some things that girls understand and guys jus= t, well they just don=92t. =09=93Well, first thing=92s first you my friend need to get that cut banda= ged up=94 CK said =93You might want to leave your stuff in your locker-=94 =09CK paused when Jessie=92s eyes started to cloud over with anger. =09=93I=92m guessing your locker has not been very cooperative this mornin= g. Am I right?=94 CK asked. =09=93Cooperative really isn=92t the term I would use CK=94 Jessie answere= d. =09CK pulled her pack of and starting digging around in the contents of th= e front pocket. =09=93Got it=94 CK said. =09CK stood up holding a needle nose pair of pliers in her right hand, a g= rin stretched across her face. =09=93Okay you=92re combination is 35-06-17=94 CK said as she turned the d= ial on the face of the locker. =09=93How in the world are you going to pull this off?=94 Jessie asked. =09=93You=92d be amazed at what a needle nose can---do=94 =09CK clamped the pliers on the locker pressing it together as tightly as possible. Then she braced her feet against the floor and pushed with every bit of her strength in one sudden burst. = As sudden as the burst of energy through CK the locker door flew open as a number of papers and books came flying out on t= op of her and Jessie sending them both to the floor. =09=93Okay Jess?=94 CK said from under the mess =93This is why you=92re lo= cker was jammed=94 She laughed. =09The two girls pushed themselves off of the ground laughing slightly at = the mess but mostly astonished at how in the world so much stuff was built up inside Jessie=92s locker. =09=93Where did all this stuff come from?!=94 Jessie asked herself out lou= d. =09=93Jessie=94 CK said putting a hand on her friend=92s shoulder =93I=92v= e always considered you a very clean, organized person, so is there something you=92re not telling me?=94 =09CK stood facing her friend with her hands on her hips staring at Jessie= like a jealous boyfriend while trying to keep a straight face the whole time. =09=93I=92m sorry=94 Jessie said bowing her head slightly =93I should have= told you about.. the.. affair=94 Jessie tried not to laugh. =09=93You=92re insane=94 CK said and started gathering up papers =93Lets s= hove all of this into a garbage can or something=94 =09Jessie turned and grabbed the garbage can at the end of the role of loc= kers in which her locker is found. After about fifteen minutes CK and Jessie get rid of most of the papers an= d put Jessie=92s locker into some kind of order before even attempting to shut it again. After the two of them manage to = shut the locker safely as well as reopen the locker to make sure it doesn=92t continue to act up, they head in the dire= ction of the guidance office. =09=93Aren=92t you supposed to be in class=94 Jessie asked finally. =09=93I=92m a teacher=92s aid this period=94 CK answered. =09=93They aren=92t going to be mad at you and why are we going to the gui= dance office?=94 Jessie asked =09=93The guidance office has medical supplies and I=92m supposed to be gu= arding that stupid big chicken in the lunch room anyway=94 CK answered. =09=93Medical stuff okay BIG CHICKEN? WHAT?!?=94 Jessie asked. =09=93It=92s for the food drive=94 CK answered with a weak laugh. =09=93Those people have taken Chicken Soup way TOO far=94 Jessie said. =09=93Yes, yes, they have, it started out as being just a book for the sch= ool to read, then there were the posters, then the power point presentations, then the school=92s own Soul book, and now = a big freakin=92 chicken to gather food=94 CK said. =09=93That=92s some insane stuff CK=94 Jessie said. =09=93You=92re telling me! There are times that I=92m really not sure abou= t those Ladies but they=92re fantastic none the less=94 CK answered. =09CK waves to one of the guidance counselors as the two girls walk into t= he office. No one there questions their presence. CK seems to basically live at school so for her to be any where= in the school is hardly ever frowned upon. After she managed to scrounge up some bandaging equipment CK sat Jessie do= wn and started to clean up the scrapes on her knee. =09=93I know you don=92t want to talk about this right now but how=92s the= Jonny thing coming along? Did you learn anything?=94 CK asked. =09CK mentioned this topic trying to keep Jessie=92s mind off of the sting= ing of her knee hoping that it wasn=92t too much of a bad idea. =09=93I can=92t figure anything out with him lately=94 Jessie answered. =09=93Maybe you should try talking to him, one on one?=94 CK suggested. =09=93Yeah, that would be a good idea but I=92m not sure=94 Jessie said = =93What if some of the rumors aren=92t merely rumors?=94 =09=93Which rumors are you talking about?=94 CK asked, =93The one going ar= ound that he=92s sleeping with the school slut or the one about him being a big fuzzy dog that thinks he=92s a human? Th= ey=92re both equally believable=94 =09A noticeable amount of rage filters through Jessie=92s mind threatening= to erupt with her friends words. Before Jessie can say a word the phone behind the guidance desk started to ring causing both girls to jump in their seats. Mrs. Hutsell, one of the guidance counselors, walks out of her office laughing = at the two young ladies. Being =91T-shirt day=92 Sylvia Hutsell was, like all of the other counselors, wearing a T-shirt and a pai= r of jeans. The front of the shirt is white with counselor spelled backwards in back ink. On the back their is a cartoon o= f a kid standing in front of a glass door with the words =93Guidance Office=94 above it. A note taped on the front of the do= or said =93I went to lunch. You are here=94. =09=93Girls calm down=94 Mrs. Hutsell said. =09She picked up the phone and placed the receiver to her ear. =09=93Good lord=94 CK mumbled. =09=93Yeah, scared me too=94 Jessie added. =09=93Guidance Office. This is Mrs. Hutsell=94 =09There is a slight pause while she listens to the person speaking on the= other end. =09=93Hello Mr. Bannon, Yes as a matter of fact your daughter just happens= to be in the office with me right now=94---=94No, she is not in any trouble=94 =09When Jessie heard her father=92s name mentioned she rose from her seat = and moved to stand next to Mrs. Hutsell. Jessie smiles showing her guidance counselor that she would be happy to ta= lk to her father at any time. =09=93Would you like to speak with her?=94 Mrs. Hutsell asked----=94Okay, = here she is=94 =09Mrs. Hutsell hands Jessie the phone without any hesitation bearing a wa= rm smile. CK had moved out of her seat a short while after Jessie had moved to the office desk and was leaning against her back against the desk when Jessie answered the phone. =09=93Hey Daddy=94 Jessie said. =09The sound of Jessie=92s voice gave away the fact that she was having a = horrible day without a second thought. She regretted her tone of voice before she even began to use it but there = was no going back. CK watched her friend trying to figure out what was running through her mind at the time. =09=93CK may I speak to you for a moment?=94 Mrs. Hutsell called. =09CK looks from her friend to her guidance counselor trying to figure out= what the best move would be. =09=93Ponchita? What=92s wrong?=94 Race asked taking on the concerned fath= er role. =09************ =09=93Sure=94 CK answered Mrs. Hutsell. =09CK walks away from her friend and moves towards Mrs. Hutsell=92s office= . =09************ =09=93I=92m just having a bad=94 Jessie answered. =09Bad day or not Jessie knew that going home was not an option. Her fath= er would never approve of such an action and neither would she. =09=93Where are you?=94 Jessie asked her father. =09Jessie finds that changing the subject helps to get her mind off of the= rest of the day. =09=93I=92m still in Germany=94 Race answered. =09=93How is everything?=94 Jessie asked. =09=93So far everything is great=94 Race answered =93But that=92s not why = I=92m calling=94 =09Race stopped without saying another word for a few moments leaving Jess= ie up in the air. =09=93And are you going to tell me why you are calling or not Dad?=94 Jess= ie asked =09=93I talked to your mother last night=94 Race answered =93 She has some= things that she needs to talk to you about=94 =09=93There=92s something more isn=92t there dad?=94 Jessie asked. =09=93Yes, there is=94 Race answered. =09=93You really enjoy leaving me in silence don=92t you dad=94 Jessie ask= ed. =09=93Jessie you aren=92t going to be able to contact me for a few days=94= Race said. =09=93Why?=94 Jessie asked. =09=93I can=92t tell you about it Jess, you know that=94 Race said. =09=93Do you know when I=92ll be able to talk to you again?=94 Jessie aske= d. =09=93No, I don=92t but I will be in contact as soon as I can=94 Race said= . =09=93I have to go Ponchita=94 Race said. =09=93Okay=94 Jessie answered =93I love you dad and please be careful=94 =09=93I=92ll be in contact=94 Race answered =93Don=92t get into any troubl= e do you understand?=94 =09=93Yes, sir, I understand. Good-bye=94 Jessie said. =09She waited until she heard the click of the other end before she put th= e phone back on the hook and turned away from the desk. CK was still talking with Mrs. Hutsell so Jessie decided t= o take a seat and wait for her to finish. It was already eight-forty-five, the bell would be ringing in about ten minutes f= or second block. Going back to World History would be a waste of time not to mention a horrible blow to her ego with Mr= . Trice and all. =09By the time CK got out of Mrs. Hutsell=92s office there was about two m= inutes left until the bell would ring so the two girls decided to go ahead and start across the school to Pre-Cal. Jessie = knew that if they went through the commons that Jonny would be waiting for her. =09=93CK, can we take the outside route?=94 Jessie asked. =09=93Sounds like a good idea to me=94 CK answered. =09They turned averting their course away from the commons relieving Jessi= e of about a ton of weight sitting on her shoulders. ********************************************* =09=93Hey, where=92s your fearless companion?=94 Amber asked as Jessie and= CK walked into the room. =09CK and Jessie move to their seats next to each other in the back of the= room. Amber is sitting in front of CK and Bonnie is sitting in front of her. =09=93You didn=92t kill him did you Jess?=94 Bonnie asked looking up from = the novel sitting on the desk in front of her. =09=93I thought CK wanted to do that?=94 Amber added with a laugh accompan= ied by CK=92s own laughter. =09=93Well, if you do decide to kill him during PreCal, and you just so ha= ppen to be using a shot gun, please feel free to pump of few shots in my direction=94 Bonnie said causing all four of th= em to laugh. =09=93I take that to mean we have a quiz today=94 Jessie asked.=09 =09=93Of course we have a quiz today=94 Amber answered. =09=93What did you think, we=92d get some kind of break?=94 Bonnie added.= =09 =09=93CK hi, let me see you=92re calculator=94 Shwan said. =09Shwan moves to his seat to the left of Amber to set his books down. Th= en he continues to the back of the room to beg CK for her calculator. =09=93Shawn, I already told you. There are not any games on my calculator= any more. I took them off because people would not leave me alone,=94 CK says referring to the fact that sh= e could never find her calculator because people from all over would take it and just have tons of fun, without her consent= . =93Now what did I forget to do for homework last night?=94 =09=93I don=92t know=94 Shwan answers and glances over to Amber. =09=93Shwan do I look I have any idea=94 Amber said. =09Amber looks at Bonnie to find her completely enthralled in her novel. B= onnie can actually feel her friends eyes upon her. Without looking up she answered their questions. =09=93I=92m reading yall, and even if I cared I=92m sure I wouldn=92t know= what the homework is=94 Bonnie said. =09=93Well, that answers that question=94 Amber mumbled. =09The group turned to Jessie who=92s green eyes doubled in size with shoc= k. =09=93Don=92t look at me!=94 Jessie shouted =93My life has been running li= ke a bad dream today. I didn=92t know we had homework last night!=94 =09=93Jessie=94 CK said =09CK spoke like she was worried about Jessie=92s well fare. =09=93Has there ever been a day in your existence in Pre Cal that we have = gone home without homework?=94 CK asked =09=93Okay, yeah, you=92re right=94 Jessie said. =09=93Maybe if we all act dead we won=92t have to take the quiz today=94 A= mber said. =09************************** =09Jonny walks through the hallway in a complete trance. Jessie had not b= een waiting for him like she usually was. His mind swirled with awkward thoughts and fear. His life had seemed so o= ff line during the past year. Nothing had seemed right to him lately and doubts about his life filled his every waki= ng thought. His dreams had been much worse. It had gotten to the point that he was afraid to close his eyes. As soon as night fall came across the land his every thought was of =91him=92. =09Jessie had been his only thread of sanity left and now he was losing he= r too. =09*************************** =09Jonny looked confused and hurt as he walked up the row to the seat next= to Jessie but instead of sitting down he turned to her and knelt down beside her desk. =09=93Oops,=94 CK mumbled to Shawn, =93someone is upset=94 =09=93You think.=94 Shawn answered. =09=93We better stay out of this one=94 Amber said. =09=93Uh hu, I think that sounds like a damn good idea=94 CK answered. =09=93Jessie, why did you, I mean you just left me?? What did I do? Did I = upset you?=94 Jonny asked =09Jonny spoke trying to get Jessie to turn and look at him but she refuse= d with a turned head. =09=93No, I just thought that you might want to walk with Kelly, that=92s = all=94 Jessie replies. =09=93Oh Christ Jess, I know you=92re having a bad day but what in the hel= l made you think that I would want to be within ten feet of that crazy slut=94 Jonny told Jessie irritation rising = in his voice. =09=93Oh give me a freaking break Jonny! I=92ve been hearing about the two= of you for about three weeks now. I was just being considerate by leaving and letting you talk to her.=94 Jessie continues. =09=93Jess, are you completely out of your mind?!=94 Jonny asks. Then he = grabs Jessie=92s arm and pulls her around to look at him. =93I would never do anything or go any where with Kelly. Do = you understand?=94 =09Jessie just looks at Jonny. She doesn=92t smile or scowl or anything s= he just stares at him. =09=93That isn=92t what=92s bothering you is it?=94 Jonny asked =09=93Jonny, let go of me=94 Jessie says now glaring at Jonny. =09=93What=92s going on Jess, please talk to me-=94 Jonny was cut off as = Jessie twisted her arm and part of her body, in turn puling herself away from Jonny=92s grip. =09=93Jonny, just don=92t talk to me okay?=94 Jessie replied coldly. =09=93But Jessie I need to talk to you.=94 Jonny begged =09When Jonny started to go on Jason and CK crack up laughing so hard that nobody could concentrate. =09While Jessie and Jonny had been trying to sort out their differences Na= than, one of CK=92s friends, had entered the room and of all things he was singing. Brandon, the guy that sits in fron= t of Shwan, is what can be refereed to as a theater freak as well as a true deep Southerner. He jumped right in when the sound= of Always Look on the Bright Side of Life a song from Monty Pyhton=92s The Life of Brian. =09After about one full verse Jason walked into the room. =93Alright! Mon= ty Python!=94 he yelled at the top of his lungs. You really have to see Jason to get the full affect of his incredible aura= . He could read an excerpt from the dictionary and make just about anyone alive laugh half to death. He has this way of usin= g facial expressions like his own dictionary. =09CK and the rest of the class, paying attention, crack up laughing. =09=93But I like the Penis song the most=94 Jason said =09CK regained control of herself and Jonny as well as Jessie are now payi= ng attention. =09=93Good Grief Jason, watch your language!=94 CK says with a straight fa= ce, =93But I=92m gonna have to disagree. The lumberjack song is by far the best. I mean come on, the guy wishes that h= e was a girly like his dear ol=92 mama=94 CK said quoting the song. =09Jessie managed to crack a smile with the rest of the class but Jonny = was completely unable to take on a light hearted attitude. His situation started out bad and has now become worse. =09=93It=92s a good thang Mrs. Rutherford ain=92t in here=94 Brandon said= . =09=93Na, she loves Monty Python=94 Jason said. =09=93Yeah, I pretty sure that she=92d be laughing along with us=94 CK add= ed =09=93Well speak of the Devil,=94 Jason said as their teacher walked into = the room. =09=93What in God=92s name is going on in here,=94 she asked =93I could he= ar you people at the end of the hall. Mrs. Mcgovern gave me this awful look=94 =09Then Mrs. Rutherford smiles making it obvious that she isn=92t very fo= nd of Mcgovern. =09=93Alright folks=94 Mrs. Rutherford started. =09She waved a stack of papers in her right hand with a most evil grin acr= oss her face. =09=93It=92s about time for that quiz I promised you yesterday=94 she said =09=93Is it too late to die suddenly=94 CK whispered =09=93It=92s not gonna do any good=94 Amber answered =93She=92ll make our = corpses take the test=94 =09Despite the begging members of the class, Mrs. Rutherford passed out th= e quiz. ****************************** Well that's it for today....stay tuned next time for Chapter 3!
