Bring back two mops and a push broom=94 Ms. Mullen=92s voice glares not with anger bu= t with disappointment. =09=93Yes, ma'am=94 Jonny and Jessie reply in unison =09The two quietly turn and walk through the commons never once exchanging= a glance not even a cold stare. Every step that Jessie takes seems to heighten her anger more and more eac= h new level at least twice as bad as the last. A complete break down is dancing around the edges of her every thought and gesture. - Just a little bit longer- has been the phrase of the day and a little bit longer has become hours and hours longer. =09Its Friday and the last place that any self respecting teenager would w= ant to be is at school. School ended over an hour and a half ago. Jessie and Jonny should at least be home by now i= f not already out with friends. No chance of that happening any time soon. Work detail is just one of those things tha= t seems to kick you when you are down and out for the count. =09=93I hate this,=94 Jonny mumbles to himself. =93Why did this happen to= day?=94 he asks himself =09=93Jonny shut-up=94 Jessie retorts and turns to Jonny with a contortion= of pure anger =93Just shut the hell up=94 =09On the verge of flipping out, Jessie restrains herself to keep from literately jumping the blond young man next to her. Her words however, are an all out attack against the youth to her ri= ght sparing no effort to obliterate his ego. =09=93Hey, back off=94 Jonny turns to face Jessie his eyes wide and speech= quick with anger =93You have NO right to talk to me like this Entire day has been my fault.=94 =09=93Look, you asshole, you are the last person on earth I want to be aro= und right now so why don't you back off!!?=94 Jessie yells back. =09Jonny doesn't as much as flinch at Jessie's threatening movements as hi= s thoughts cloud over with rage. =09=93Would you calm down!=94 Jonny yells =93What has gotten into you?!= =94 =09=93This POS day and you aren't helping=94 Jessie replies =09=93God damn it Jessie!=94 Jonny says stopping in his tracks, =93Its ov= er now. The day is O-V-E-R. So just move on and deal with it=94 =09=93You brought it up=94 Jessie retorts =09=93Oh God=94 he mumbles =93and you don=92t know how sorry I am=94 Jonn= y replies angry satire fills his response as he turns and continues to walk to towards the West end of the round building. =09 =09Jessie just wants to find a place where she can be alone curl up on the floor, bury her head in her hands and cry. The anger she continues to pummel Jonny with is the only way she can hide = the depression and pain stuffed down in her chest. Afraid of bursting into tears she turns her pain inward and grows = more and more irate. =09The entire day had been horrible. Nothing went right, not one single t= hing. First her alarm clock didn't go off. The only reason that she got out of bed at all is due to her internal cloc= k. With thirty minutes instead of her regular hour she decided to take a shower and skip breakfast. Of course the water heat= er is busted and she had completely forgotten. She jumped in the shower and was so shocked by the cold the she slipped an= d banged the side of her head on the wall. By the time she managed to get the shower to stop running she was literate= ly freezing half to death. =09Her teeth chattered for thirty minutes straight while she tried her bes= t to get her cloths on, and grab her belongings. After four or five times trying to pick up her Algebra two bo= ok she ended up kicking it down the front stairwell and hitting Bandit. Bandit yelped and took off running to hide in the gar= age while the zipper on Jessie's back pack torn and everything she had packed fell to the floor with a series of thuds. W= ith an angered sigh she stuffed her books into her old pack and managed to get out of the house only fifteen minutes late= . =09Of course in this state of shock she left her Physics research paper si= tting on the computer console in her room. Something like that is totally out of character for her. Jessie couldn't believe that she could do something so incredibly stupid. Then when she got out of her ride=92s car, her wallet managed to = slip out of her back pocket. No money, no ID, no Honor Society permission slip, no key to the house, no way of getting food= , everything had been in that wallet. Not to mention the fact that she owes two of her friends money and had promisedth= em both that she would pay them back today. Once again Jessie would have to slip out of character. =09It=92s the last week of school and it=92s not supposed to end like this= . Of course the seniors are already gone, lucky bastards. As Jonny and she walked to the main entrance some stupid drunk senior decided to come speeding through the parking lot. What the maniac was doing at school to begin with was be= yond Jessie but of course he was headed straight for her. Normally Jessie would have been able to merly step out = of the way but not this morning, instead she stood in the direct path of the racing vehicle just waiting for it to plow= her over. =09Jonny glanced at his friend to find her completely apathetic to the car speeding straight for her. It was almost as if she wanted the car to hit her. Jonny dropped his bag, took a short run= ning start and leaped at Jessie shoving her out of the way. He cushioned Jessie's fall the best that he could as they sli= de across the pavement together. Despite Jonny=92s efforts Jessie scraped up her hands and tore a hole in her knee = that started bleeding on the spot and didn't want to stop all day. Jonny picked Jessie off of the ground trying to grab her attention with his eyes but Jessie just seemed to stare straight through him into the far distance. For a minute Jonny thou= ght that he caught a flash of anger run over Jessie=92s gaze. Not anger at near death, but anger at Jonny for moving h= er out of the way. Pulling her into a tight hug Jonny apoligized for the incident like it was his complete fault. =09Jessie finally managed to put herself back together the best that she possibly could. With a concerned look and a strong hand on Jessie=92s shoulder, Jonny walked his friend to = the front of the school. =09As the day couldn=92t possibly get any worse the security guard decided= to harass Jessie to the point that homicidal tendencies almost took action. Without an ID one can enter the school very easily but if one without an ID sets of the metal detector on the way in the door one doesn't go anywhere. Of course, Jessie=92s, ID is in her wallet which just so happens to be in her ride=92s car. The two metal plates accompanied by twelve screws in her arm set of the metal detector on que. Jessie and Jonny both worked to their absolute best to t= alk the security guard into letting them into the school building. After wasting at least fifteen minutes of arguing the gu= ard finally let the two teens into the school. =09Life moved on just a smooth when Jessie and Jonny reached their lockers= . Jonny=92s locker opened nice and quickly but Jessie=92s refused to budge a single inch. =09=93Here let me help you=94 Jonny said moving to stand next to Jessie in= front of her locker. =09=93Its not going to move, I promise=94 Jessie said feeling defeated. =09=93Optimism Jess. Now, what's your combination again?=94 Jonny asked. =09=93Optimism huh? 35-06-17=94 Jessie answered =93Its going to take a hug= e change in the pace of this day to make me the least bit optimistic=94 =09=9335=94 Jonny mumbled =93If we both pull on this crazy thing it has to= open, 06...and 17=94 =09Jonny pulled up on the lock but it didn't move, not seem to move, even slightly. =09=93Okay I'm gonna need your help on this one=94 Jonny muttered =09Jessie moved as close to Jonny as she dared and tried to get some kind = of grip on the lock. =09=93On three=94 Jessie said =93One, Two, Three!=94 =09Both Jessie and Jonny braced their feet against the tile floor in order= to use their leg strength as well as arm strength to pry the lock from its stubbornness. It didn't budge, not one = bit. The 7:20 bell rings and Jessie's book for first block was still firmly tucked inside her secure locker. =09=93My God, I don=92t think the jaws of life are gonna help you with tha= t thing.=94 Jonny said =93I hope their isn't anything important to you in there=94 =09=93Just my World History book=94 Jessie answered =93I=92m sure Mr. Tric= e won=92t care..yeah right...I=92m gonna get the chew out of my life. You better get to class.=94 She said.. =09=93Mrs. Hubbard won=92t mind Jess, she never does. Besides I think we= =92re watching Bevis and Butthead Do America today and to be honest I=92m thinking about just skipping the whole damn c= lass=94 Jonny said. Then as if on que the strap on Jessie=92s old book bag had it=92s final br= eath and tore in half sending her bag crashing to the floor =09=93Oh, let me tell you how surprising that was=94 Jessie said rubbing h= er hand across her eyes. =09Before she can bend down to get her bag Jonny beats her to it. He slin= gs the pack over his shoulder using the strap that is still intact. =09=93Jess, you=92re bleeding again=94 Jonny said =09=93And the plot thickens=94 Jessie says =93or the clot whatever=94 =09 =93Why don=92t you get a Band-Aid for that?=94 suggested =09=93I=92m sure something would end up going wrong with that too=94 Jessi= e answered. =09=93How could a band aid go wrong?=94 Jonny asked. =09=93I don=92t know, the office might charge me for it or something crazy= like that=94 Jessie answered. =09They started towards Jessie first period class room in no obvious hurry= . =09=93You would think that the last week of school wouldn=92t suck quite t= his bad=94 Jessie half laughed. =09=93Well, this is school and I=92m pretty sure school isn=92t supposed t= o be a whole heck of a lot of fun=94 Jonny answered =09Mr. Trice=92s room is directly infront of them now, the only thing keep= ing Jessie from her morning mental bash session. =09=93You know I bet if you went to first aid you might be able to get a p= ass from them and not be counted tardy=94 Jonny suggested. =09He started to hand Jessie her shredded book bag but then stopped. The intense look of exhaustion and unhappiness on Jessie=92s face had hit him so harshly that he was not able= to stand it. Jonny absolutely had to do something to try to help no matter how small a gesture. Without a single = word he set Jessie=92s bag on the ground and then he took off his own bag and set it down on the floor. He kneeled now= and unzipped Jessie=92s and his bag.=09 =09=93What are you doing?=94 Jessie asked finally. =09Jonny had taken his books, notebooks, pens, paper, graphing calculator = out of his bag and set everything on the ground. At the time of Jessie=92s question he was taking out everything i= n Jessie=92s bag and setting it on the ground. =09=93You=92re going to use my bag today, it=92s in one piece=94 Jonny ans= wered. =09Jonny started loading all of his belongings into Jessie=92s bag while p= utting Jessie=92s stuff into his bag. =09=93Jonny, you really don=92t have to do that=94 Jessie pleaded. =09Jessie kneeled down on the floor next to Jonny trying to catch his glan= ce in order to change his mind. When she found his eyes she knew that there was no way of persuading him. Jonny ga= ve Jessie a meek smile before closing up both bags and standing up. =09=93No buts about it=94 Jonny said. =09Jonny managed to persuade Jessie to turn around and he put the bag on h= er shoulders. =09=93Jonny, this really isn=92t necessary=94 Jessie pleaded. =09=93Yes, it is=94 Jonny replied =93I wish I could tell you that everythi= ng is going to get better but I=92m afraid that might jinx the both of us=94 =09=93You need to get to class anyway=94 Jessie added =09=93Good point=94 Jonny answered. =09Jonny put a gentle strong grip on Jessie=92s upper arm and pulled her a= little bit closer to him. =09=93Today will work out=94 Jonny whispered =09Before turning to walk away Jonny pulled his friend into a soft hug and= then continued down the hallway towards his next class. Jessie watched her friend leave with a near apathetic gaz= e. =09So much had been happening in the past few weeks. Dr. Quest and Hadji = had left nearly three weeks ago to attend a conference in South America. The absence of the two gentlemen ha= d as much burdened the Quest Compound as it did leave the three remaining inhabitants relieved. In a strange se= nse of being Race, Jessie, and Jonny had found life a little less eventful for a change not to mention the amount of laun= dry had been depleted a great deal. With only the three of them Mrs. Evens, the maid, was given well deserved time off, awa= y from the compound while Jessie and Jonny were left with her many jobs. =09Without the full team Jessie had started to notice a few things in the = habits and attitudes of those left behind. Not her father so much as her friend Jonny. With the nonstop activity of regular Quest life Jessie had never noticed the fact that Jonny was spending less and less time at the mansion. There wer= e days that he would leave so early for school that Jessie wouldn=92t see him in the morning at all. Sometimes he wouldn= =92t come home at night but the next morning he would be at school looking as Jonny-like as always. =09Wanting to confront him but not wanting to create a conflict Jessie had= begun questioning her=92s and Jonny=92s mutual friends. Most of them looked at her like she was crazy when she wo= uld bring up the subject. To them Jonny had been acting the same that he always did but that=92s not what Jessie had b= een asking. ~~=09=93That=92s not what I mean=94 Jessie asked her friend Katie =93I kn= ow that he is not acting different. I just want to know why he=92s never around anymore=94 =09Jessie had come to Katie last when she knew that she should have talked= to her first. Katie is very big in the social scene outside school. She goes to every club that she can get into every night that she gets a chance. Jessie has often wondered if she ever goes home at all. =09=93Well, he hasn't been anywhere that I've been=94 Katie had answered. =09Jessie returned Katie's answer with a concerned look. =09=93I tell you what=94 Katie added =93Ill talk to some people for you ok= ay? In the meantime why don=92t you try asking ~~him.=94 =09Of course Jessie never got around to talking to Jonny about it. It was= n't that she was afraid to bring to topic up. What she was afraid of was what she might find out. Katie is very well connected and Jessie had just assumed to hear what she was going to hear from Katie instead of receiving a lie from Jonn= y. =09With an extremely concerned face and tone of voice Katie had told Jessi= e that she had found absolutely nothing. At that point both girls knew that something was very wrong with the situation. According to what had been learned Jonny would just disappear from the face of the earth. =09With Jessie=92s questioning rumors began to fly through out the school.= Its amazing how much people can bend the truth into something so incredibly false. Apparently a rumor was star= ted amongst the guys that Jessie hated Jonny and amongst the girls that she was complete suffocating Jonny. It was a complete mess. Luke Peters (the male slut of the school) once again began to pine all his efforts after Jessie. Jessie= is in no way part of Luke's click but she has received the reputation of being extremely =91hard to get=92 more like hig= hly intelligent and there is no way she is going to let some male make her life difficult. This reputation of course inspired Luk= e. =09Jessie's anxiety level started to escalate through the roof in turn rai= sing her level of anger right along with it. Everything that was happening from her terrible luck to the fact that her = shoe is untied pummels her thoughts as she stands motionless infront of the door to Mr. Trice's room. Taking a deep shuttering breath in Jessie cringed then opened the door and walked inside. ***************************************** That's the end of chapter 1.......what'd ya'll think ******************************************************************** * The Jonny Quest mailinglist jq@edc.ml.org * ******************************************************************** * To unsubscribe, send an e-mail to: majordomo@edc.ml.org * * with the message: unsubscribe jq subject is ignored * ********************************************************************
