Good Friend ~ by Kara E.~ It seemed like a normal day for Jonny Quest. He had gotten an A on his Geometry finial and was early to every class, which was unusual for a teenager who seemed to know everyone in the school. Things seemed to be going good for the teen until he got home. "So Jonny you seem to be in a good mood,"said Jessie Bannon, long time friend and daughter of the Quest's bodyguard Race Bannon. "Yup," he replied back to her as he closed the door of her 99 Mustang. "Let me guess you aced that Geometry final you were stressing about?" " Yup," Jonny said as he opened the garage door to go inside and held it open for his redheaded friend. "Its been a great day! How about you?" " Well it could have been better I guess but okay," Jessie said as she walked through the hall and laid down her bag on the sofa in the living room and looked over at her blonde friend who was crawling on the floor. "Jonny what are you doing?" she asked. " I'm searching for Bandit, he most of the time comes and greets us as we come in, but today I don't see him," he said. He got up from the floor and started calling his miniature bull dog. He thought to him self that it was odd of Bandit to hid from him like this. "Bandit, Bandit where are you boy?" he asked. Just then his father came in from his study. He looked depressed, sorrow had consumed over his face, and within the little light that was shinning where he was standing you could see that he had been crying. "He looks the same as he did when Mom died," Jonny thought. The look that he was staring at was a perfect replica of when he tried telling Jonny that his mom had died. Just then Jonny knew that Bandit wasn't going to be answering his call. " Jonathan, I need to talk to you in my study," said Dr. Benton Quest. His voice was shaky as he watched his son get up from the floor to walk over to the study. The two walked down the hall in silence. It seemed like a walk of a life time for Jonny. He now knew what a death row inmate felt like, walking to a place not knowing what will come next. Just before he got there he heard Jessie's father, Race go into the living room. He figured that Race was getting ready to give the same talk to Jessie. He finally reached the study. He looked inside it hoping to see Bandit inside. His memories flooded his mind of when he was nine and had snuck in the study with Bandit and decided to play catch in there since it was one of the biggest rooms of the house. He also remember how big of a mess he left in there and how big of trouble he got into. With that memory he smiled, "the good OLE times," he thought, " man I miss my childhood" he thought. "Take a seat son," DR. Quest said, unknowing that he had interrupted his son's thoughts. "What's wrong Pop?" he asked. " Jonny, today while you were at school, we had to put Bandit to sleep. He had grown so old and had got cancer in his stomach that had grown into his brain, causing him to have a stroke. I am sorry son. I really wished you could have been there. Race and I took him to three different vets and on the way to the third one is when he had the stroke and he couldn't see nor stand up," he said shaky. He sat there speechless as his son started to cry. It was the first time he had seen him cry since his mother died. Just as he saw the first tear come down he felt his own starting to flow. He remembered that Bandit had been a gift from him and his mother, they had given him to Jonny for his fourth birthday and Bandit had eaten all the cake before any one else even got to see the cake. " Why didn't you pull me out of school? I didn't even get to say good bye or that I loved him. WHY did you have to make that decision for me?" Jonny asked. "I'm I'm sorry son," DR Quest said while crying, "you didn't him suffering did you?" "No, but you could have had the decency to get me out of school!" Jonny said. " I'm sorry son. When Race and I went in to say our regards, we told him that you loved him and you would never forget him. We also told him that he was a good dog, friend and teammate. Jonny I'm sorry. Race just buried him in the back yard under his favorite tree to lay under," he said. "Why did he have to lose the fight? I hate you!" Jonny said has he cried harder. He then all the sudden ran out of the room. He already knew what his father was going to say. He decided to run to where Race had buried him. As he reached the tree, he saw a fresh grave dug. He then fell to his knees and cried. While he cried he tried getting out the words he wanted to say without jumbling them up too much. "I'm sorry boy," he said as he sniffed trying to swallow his tears. " I love you boy, and I will miss you," he said. "Race do you think he will ever forgive me?"asked DR. Quest. "I think he already has. He just said that out of emotions. He'll learn to live on without him. It will be tough but he can do it." Race said as the two of them looked out of the patio door glass. " I love you Bandit, I always have and always will," Jonny said. THE END! I'm crying myself. Comments people! Love to hear them.
