Race just laughed and shook his head. “Sweetheart, it’s bed time! You’re going to be too excited to go to sleep!” He didn’t mention the fact that tossing her up in the air and catching her was a little dangerous since the room had a low ceiling. She just grinned up at him. “But I’m not sleepy!” Race shook his head. “Sorry, Ponchita. But you know you need your sleep. Tomorrow’s going to be a big day for you.” Jessie stuck out her lower lip. “Can’t I stay up a little bit longer?” Race picked her up. “Jessie, it’s your bedtime. You know that if you don’t get any sleep, you won’t be in a good mood in the morning. Now, go upstairs and get ready for bed. I’ll be up to tuck you in a few moments.” Jessie nodded reluctantly as Race lowered her to the ground. He sighed as she took off up the stairs. He loved her past the stars above. He couldn’t believe how fast the time was beginning to pass. “Soon, she’ll be graduating from college and starting a life of her own.” Race didn’t like that thought one bit. Starting up the stairs, he heard Jessie finishing up in the bathroom. Jessie poked her head out at the sound of his footsteps. “I’m almost ready for bed, Daddy.” Race nodded. “I’m very glad to see that.” After Jessie finished, she dragged Race to her room. “Will you sing me a song?” Race glanced at her, surprised she didn’t ask for her favorite bedtime story. “A song? What do you want me to sing?” Jessie shrugged. Race thought for a minute. He didn’t really sing much, or at least around anyone. He never really thought he had a very good voice. What was he supposed to sing to her? Then it hit him. It was an old song, but still great in his book. “Okay, Ponchita.” He turned on the night light in her room, and turned off the overhead light. He tucked her in, then lay down beside her. It felt funny at first to sing, but the song just flowed from inside him. Lay your head down on my shoulder I won’t let the night get colder I’ll protect you - I’ll be keepin’ Trouble far from where you’re sleepin’ Until you wake in the morning You got the world to yourself Dream on - Dream about the world We’re gonna live in one fine day Dream on - Spend the night in Heaven I’ll be here to light your way Someday tomorrow will smile A little girl in the meanwhile Dream on Race stroked her cheek. He could tell she was finally getting sleepy. He continued singing. You’re a princess - Chains around you I’m the hero who just found you ‘Til the brand new day must wake you Let imagination take you Go where the music is playing I’ll be along in a while Dream on - Dream about the world We’re gonna live in one fine day Dream on - Spend the night in Heaven I’ll be here to light your way Someday tomorrow will smile A little girl in the meanwhile Dream on Race smiled tenderly at his now sleeping daughter. She did look like a princess, her long red hair spread out over her pillow. He felt like the luckiest father alive. His voice softened as he tucked her in, about to leave. Dream on - Dream about the world We’re gonna live in one fine day Dream on - Spend the night in Heaven I’ll be here to light your way Dream on Just as he was leaving, he heard a faint “I love you, Daddy.” He smiled. “I love you too, sweetheart.” Send comments and stuff to Me. © 1999 LIGHT STORM ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ******************************************************************** * The Jonny Quest mailinglist jq@edc.ml.org * ******************************************************************** * To unsubscribe, send an e-mail to: majordomo@edc.ml.org * * with the message: unsubscribe jq subject is ignored * ********************************************************************
