Jonny's voice came over the phone. > "The girls are wanting me to go to a party tonight, but after my latest > night class, I'll go ahead and head home. I miss you." Jessie had been at > college for the whole semester without one visit back home that was about a > four hour drive from the University she was going to. Between school and > her room mates, she barley had time to get a decent night sleep. > "I haven't seen you since Christmas." > "I'll be there by the time you fall asleep tonight, I promise. I have to > go. Chemistry starts in five minutes, and it's on the other side of > campus." > "I'll see you later tonight. I've missed you so much." > "We'll talk in the morning. I can't wait to see you again. Bye Jonny." > "Bye Jess." Jessie hung up the pay phone that sat by the entrance of the > head office building. She picked up her backpack from the floor and headed > toward the classes. > It was dark as she quickly walked along the sidewalk that lined the > outside of the campus grounds. Across the street was where the apartments > filled with loud, drinking college students were starting their party. > Jessie watched as a couple walked laughing hand in hand up to the entrance. > She let out a sigh as she thought of her life back home. She couldn't > wait to get her next class over and head home. The noise of the party made > it difficult for her to hear. > Out of nowhere, a hand clamped over her mouth as an arm wrapped around her > waist. She was being dragged behind a tree, just beyond the reach of > light. The stranger's face was covered by a black mask, only their fierce > eyes and pink lips shone. Jessie loosened her right arm from their grasp > and elbowed them across the face. Their grip let go, and she took off > running and screaming. Laughter and music filled the air from across the > street, muffling her call for help. The stranger tackled her as she got > into a clearing and slapped her across the face. They were tearing at her, > but she refused to give up. She reached up at their shoulder and dug her > nails in deep, tearing into the tender flesh. Their blood slid down the > side of her arm. That's when they pulled out the knife. > The girl from the couple that Jessie had observed earlier glanced over > from the light reflection from the blade. "Stop!" Everyone at the party > heard the girl scream from the sight of Jessie's attack. > "Let's go help her!" A blond boy from the party announced. Him and five > others ran across the street and watched as the blade was swinging up and > down. Just as they approached, the figure took off running. The other > boys ran after it, away from Jessie's blood covered body. The blond boy > kneeled down next to her and laid her head up onto his lap. > "Jonny?" Jessie's voice was shaky and weak. The blond stranger was > caught off guard, but he played along. > "I'm here." She smiled, her teeth spotted with blood. > "I love you Jonny. I'm sorry I never told you. I was going to tell you." > The blond boy felt his heart stop. > "You're going to be okay. Hold on for me. I don't want to loose you." > Tears formed in his eyes. > "Jonny, I'm scared. I tried to fight back." He shook his head. > "Shh, don't talk like that." The college campus police pulled up just as > Jessie's head fell back. The blond boy leaned over her and cried. > ***THREE YEARS LATER*** > Jonny stood over the grave with his sunglasses covering his blue crying > eyes. He should had been there. He should had been the one who had > actually held her as she spoke those last words. He should had been there > to stop it in the first place. He should had made her come home a week > before. All these things were swimming through his mind. Those college > kids never caught who had done this to her. > "I'm sorry to disturb you." Jonny turned around to the voice. A pale > blond man stood, staring down at the yellow rose Jonny had laid at the base > of the stone. "You must be Jonny Quest." > "Yes, who's asking?" The stranger's eyes were dark and sad, but Jonny was > surprised in how well he held himself. He was a proud person with a > heartbreaking past. > "I'm Cameron Bell." Jonny stared at him for a long moment, not knowing > what to say. That hair and face, the last thing Jessie had seen. > > "So after I barely graduated, I spent most of my time hanging around my > friends. Jonny stopped > talking when the waitress brought them their drinks. He poured in the > sugar and stirred his tea before looking up to Cameron. "So how has it > been the past three years?" > "Well," He sniffed the coffee in his hands, letting the vapors soothe his > spirits. "after that night, I had a hard time going back to the campus. > My parents had me transfered to a private school in Washington, and I got > my masters in Accounting. Jonny sat his glass down. > "I usually try to visit the grave at least one time on the anniversary." > Cameron lowered his eyes to the table. After a moment of silence Jonny > spoke. "So where are you staying at while you're in town?" > "I'm not even sure how long I'm staying. I just felt that I had to see > where she was from, get to know the people she knew and loved. I just want > to have a better understanding of who she was. I owe myself that much." > "Why don't you stay at my place? Cameron made a small > smile. > "If it's not too much trouble I will accept." > "It'll be my honor." > > Down in the pits of hell, paced a being, unknown by most of the world. > "That Cameron boy better not screw up the plans I have." She smiled with such cruelty it was unnerving. > "Yes, but the alternative isn't pleasant." > "Then I'm ready for your command." She tapped her fingertips together as > she paced across the red room. > "You are going to keep an eye on those two, especially that Jonny. It > took a moment for him to remember that he was staying at Jonny's apartment. > He laid back onto the pillow and pulled his hand up to his forehead as he > tried to think. 'What am I doing here?' He thought to himself. Why did > he have this feeling that Jessie wanted him there. He closed his eyes, and > he remembered the look on her face just before she died. She was pleading > for him to end her suffering, her fears. Cameron tossed across the bed as > an overwhelming feeling of helplessness shot his nerves. > There was a reason why he was there, and he knew that whatever it was, he > was ready. Even after being dead, Jessie needed his help. He failed her > once. He wasn't going to let it happen again. After a couple of minutes > of listening to his own breathing, Cameron decided to get up. He made his > way into the living room where he saw Jonny lifting weights. > "Good morning." Jonny looked up from the heavy iron in his hands. > "Morning Cameron. Are you hungry?" He shook his head. > "I don't think I could eat anything. My stomach is a little upset." By > the look on Jonny's face, Cameron could tell he knew the feeling. Jonny > sat down the weights and picked up a glass of water off the coffee table. > Cameron paced across the room and noticed the red covered album book. > "May I?" Jonny looked at the book and nodded. > "Sure." Cameron picked it up and opened to the front page. A long > article was glued to the paper. The headline read, "Rockport Student > Murdered on College Grounds." The year on the top corner was dated exactly > three years ago. He turned the page and found a smaller article reading, > "Bannon Murder Weapon Found." The date was close to a week past the > previous. He scanned through and read about the details surrounding the > knife. The next page contained some pictures of a young red head. Jessie > was on a swing in one picture, smiling devilishly at the camera. He > flipped through all the pictures until he got to the last page that had one > more article glued to the paper. It was her obituary. He quickly closed > the book and sat it down on the end table. > "Did you see who did it?" Cameron lowered his eyes. > "Just a black figure, bleeding from the left shoulder." Jonny sat down > the water and sat on the recliner. > "They did a DNA test on the blood on Jessie's hand, but there wasn't a > match. It was as if the Devil himself killed her." Images of the blade > swinging in the night air made Cameron close is eyes in agony. > "She loved you very much." Jonny sat back in his seat. > "What did she say to you exactly. The police only told me that she > thought you were me." Cameron got comfortable in his seat. > "You'll sleep better not knowing." > "I wish I was there." Jonny lowered his eyes and tears fell down his > cheeks. > "No you don't." Cameron went over and put a hand on his shoulder. "No > one should have seen what I did. You have to learn to move on." > "You sound like Jessie." The two guys let out a small laugh in spite of > themselves. > At the slightly open window was a black hawk perched on the fire escape. > He flew off into the morning sun, eager to report to Jezibel. Ribbs > approached a narrow alley where a disgustingly dirty woman sat on the > concrete ground leaning against the building. He landed at her feet and > walked up to rag covered body. When she smiled, her teeth were dull and > scarce. "Cameron may be a problem." > "Are you certain? I don't want to get ahead of myself." He glanced to > his left and then his right before he spoke. > "I think it's time to move to plan B." She stood up, newspapers falling > from her lap. She did a last check and then swung her hands in front of > her. With a quick spark she stood in a nice black business apparel. The > skirt was cut just above her knees, and her black hair was pulled back into > a bun. With her green cobra shaped eyes she was a sight to behold. > "Careful Jonny. I'm coming." > > Cameron had decided to spend that night lazing around the apartment. > Jonny walked around looking for any disorder in the room. "Will you sit > down and relax Jonny? Your apartment is clean enough to make computer > chips in it." > "I just want to make sure that everything is as it should be." He let out > a sigh. "I'm going for a walk." > "Are you sure?" > "Yeah, I have a lot on my mind tonight." He grabbed his coat from beside > the door. "Just lock up behind me." With that he was gone. > Jonny got in the elevator and punched the lobby button. The numbers above > him lit as it went from forth, third, second. The doors opened on the > second floor, and an attractive woman came on. Jonny looked over at her as > the doors closed. She gave him a lopsided grin, and that's when he > realized he was smiling back at her. Something fell out of her hand, and > they both bent over to pick it up. Their hands came together over the pen, > and she blushed. > "Thank you. You're such a gentleman." They stood up straight, studying > each other. > "My name is Jonny." She held out her hand. > "I'm Jezibel." The sound of her name gave him goosebumps. > "That's a beautiful name." The elevator doors opened to the lobby, and > she began out the door but turned to him. > "Would you like to have some coffee with me?" He quickly walked up beside > her. > "If it's not too much trouble." She let out a giggle. > They walked out the door, walking closely. Ribbs was waiting outside on a > street light. He knew this dream, oh so well, but > something was different. > "Cameron listen to me, I need your help. Jonny needs your help. There is an evil lurking. She will stop > at nothing to feed off his hate." He was confused. > "What do you mean? Who is she?" She took a moment to collect her > thoughts. > "It's what she is. She's powerful. She's not human." Jessie's head fell > to the side as the campus police pulled up. Cameron sat her head down > gently into the grass. Without any thought he realized he was once again > in the apartment. > "Jonny." He gasped. > > "That's so funny Jonny." Jezibel scooted closer to him at the booth that > they sat in. The large window next to them reflected their hazy image. > Jonny felt special with this beautiful woman. She was respectful and had a > strong nature. He loved those qualities in everyone he met. He turned to Jezibel's sparkling green eyes. > They held him. > "My mind sometimes goes to a friend I once had. She died a long time ago > though." She felt the pain in his heart, and her hunger grew from within. > As they passed by an alley she pushed him into the dark shadows. > "Jezibel, what are..." She covered his lips with hers. She could taste > the pain, the agony. They held each other as the kiss became more > demanding. Ribbs watched from a distance like usual. How much longer > would this continue? He flew away with a mission. Time for his > unscheduled plan C. > Cameron ran down the sidewalk. It had been almost an hour since he woke > from the dream, and he still couldn't find Jonny anywhere. He leaned on a > streetlight for a rest. A black hawk swooped from the sky and landed on > the ground at his feet. "What do you want?" Cameron said, not expecting > to get an answer. > "Jonny's in trouble." Cameron looked side to side to see where the voice > came from. > "Who said that?" > "Down here Einstein." Cameron smirked. > "Okay, what's going on?" > "This isn't a joke. If you care to save your friend's life you will > follow me." Cameron didn't know what to think. > "I was advised to trust no one." The bird began to fly away. > "Are you really willing to chance that I might be right?" Before the bird > could get out of view Cameron began to follow it. 'Here goes nothing.' He > thought. > He followed the hawk for three blocks, and they came to an alley. Cameron > looked around breathlessly. Where is he? Then there was a strange muffled > noise coming from the alley. "Jonny?" He walked into the dark and saw > Jonny kissing a beautiful woman. He blushed and began to leave, but > suddenly he felt a rush of wind blow by. > "It's her!" Jessie's voiced screamed in his mind. Almost in reflex he > pushed the woman from Jonny. She snapped and snarled at him, but Jonny > fell lifeless onto the ground. Her beautiful face turned dark, her nails > grew sharp, and her teeth were now long fangs. > "Fool, you can't beat me." Cameron held up his fist. > "Don't underestimate me." She jumped at him with her claws out. He > twisted around and flung his boot into her face. She only rolled once > before jumping back onto her feet again. > "If that's the best you can do, then you're more blood for me too feed > from." He picked up a metal pipe sitting on the ground. > "Why don't you come and find out?" With a howling cry she jumped at him. > He swung the pipe and knocked her to the side, but her claw slashed his > chest. They both fell to the ground. > "Now you die." She jumped on top of him, and he struggled to keep her > fangs from his neck. His hand ripped her shirt from her shoulder and a > terrible scar darkened her white flesh. She felt his anger grow when he > realized that she was the one who killed Jessie. "Yes that's it. Hate > me." > "I wouldn't give you the pleasure." He kicked his feet up and flung her > through the air. > "You'll give me more than that." She went for him again, but a black hawk > swooped down and pecked at her face. "Ribbs what are you doing?" She > yelled. > "I'm stopping you from doing to others what you did to me. I'm not your > slave anymore." While she was busy fighting with Ribbs, Cameron picked up > the pipe that he had dropped. > "You want pain, you got it!" He drew the metal into her heart. Her cries > shook the ground as she fell back, pulling Ribbs down with her. Cameron > felt on his chest where she had scratched him during the fight and realized > the cut was very deep. > "No!" A red flame burst from the ground, and she slowly disappeared. > Ribbs was also gone. Cameron groaned as he walked over to Jonny. > He pressed his ear to Jonny's chest. Nothing. "Hold on Jonny...I'll find > help." Cameron turned to walk out of the alley but passed out in a pool of > his own blood. > A white light crossed the chilly night air and stopped inches from Jonny's > limp body. With a flash, Jessie appeared wearing a white gown that waved > just above her bare feet. She leaned down at him with a smile and kissed > his cold lips ever so gently. > "Jonny, time to go home." His blue eyes opened slowly and his face lit up > when he saw her. > "Jess." He pulled her into another kiss. They held on for a long time, > neither one wanting to let go. Finally Jessie pulled back. > "Come." Jonny stood up and looked down at Cameron who laid on the ground > breathing quick and shallow. > "What about Cameron?" She turned and looked down at him. Without a word > she leaned over and kissed his cheek. The large gashes across his chest > began to close, and his breathing became less forced. > "Jonny, Jessie." He opened his eyes drowsily. The image of Jonny and > Jessie standing hand in hand glowed before him. Jonny was in a white tux > with his blond hair slicked back, and Jessie's red hair flowed past her > shoulders and waved in the breeze. > "Thank you Cameron.
